Freshly baked bread brings an unmistakable aroma and an unforgettable texture, and this simple homemade bread recipe is essential for any cooking enthusiast. Without the need for a mixer or complicated techniques, this recipe will give you a delicious bread that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, perfect for any meal.
Ingredients:
- 500 g white flour (for a more complex flavor, you can use 250 g whole wheat flour and 250 g white flour)
- 10 g salt
- 10 g sugar (optional, to help caramelize the crust)
- 7 g dry yeast or 20 g fresh yeast
- 350 ml warm water (about 37°C, warm to the touch)
- 30 ml olive oil (for a richer taste)
Procedure:
1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Mix well to evenly distribute the salt in the flour, as it helps develop gluten.
2. In a small container, dissolve the yeast and sugar in the warm water. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until a foam forms on the surface. This step is essential for activating the yeast.
3. Once the yeast is active, add the water mixture to the bowl with the flour. Also add the olive oil. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to mix the ingredients until a thick dough forms.
4. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and begin to knead it gently with your hands. You don’t need to knead for hours; 5-10 minutes is sufficient. The dough should become smooth and elastic. If it is too sticky, you can add a little flour, but be careful not to overdo it.
5. Shape the dough into a ball and place it in an oiled bowl. Cover the bowl with a damp towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place, away from drafts, for about an hour, or until it doubles in size.
6. After the dough has risen, turn it out onto the counter and shape it into the desired form: a round loaf or a baguette. Place the bread on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
7. Let the bread rise for another 30 minutes, covered with a towel. During this time, preheat the oven to 220°C.
8. Before baking the bread, make a few shallow cuts on the surface with a sharp knife. This will allow steam to escape during baking, forming a crispy crust.
9. Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, or until it is golden and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. You can check if it is fully baked by inserting a thermometer into the center; the internal temperature should be about 90°C.
10. Once the bread is baked, let it cool on a wire rack. This step is important to avoid a soggy texture.
