Savory cheese puff pastry parcels

Dessert - Savory cheese puff pastry parcels by Natasa G. - Recipia

Savory cheese puff pastry parcels are served warm as a snack, with golden parcels ready in ten minutes. You can serve them for breakfast or on an appetizer platter; the pastry puffs up in the oven, while the cheese stays in the middle. I prefer to crumble the cheese into small pieces so it’s easy to divide among the squares. Preparation: 15 minutes. Cooking: 10 minutes. Resting: 30 minutes. Total time: 55 minutes. Serves: 4. Approximately 500 kcal and 15 g of protein per serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 sheet of puff pastry
  • 200 g brined cheese
  • 1 sheet of parchment paper
  • 1 egg

Preparation

1. Let the puff pastry thaw for 30 minutes at room temperature, until you can bend it without it cracking. 2. Cut the pastry into squares. Put some brined cheese on each one, then bring the corners together and place the parcels on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. 3. Beat the egg and brush the parcels with it. Bake at 200°C for 10 minutes, until golden.

Notes

Serve them with fresh tomatoes; they’re a bit like a warm sandwich, except the crisp pastry takes the place of the bread. For a less salty filling, you can use 200 g of well-drained fresh cheese. The pastry should be thawed but still cold when you cut it, otherwise it sticks more easily. If the cheese is sitting in whey, drain and crumble it before filling the parcels. Keep the baked parcels in a box in the fridge for up to 3 days; puff pastry contains gluten, and cheese and egg are dairy products and allergens.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the cheese leak out of the parcels?

Cheese that’s too wet can come out through the seams. Leave about 1 cm clear around the edge of each square and pinch the corners together firmly.

What should I do if the pastry sticks when I cut it?

Put it in the fridge for 15 minutes, then cut it while it’s cold and firm.

Can I brush the parcels without egg?

Yes. Use 1 tablespoon of milk instead of the egg; the surface will brown less.
