The history of the chocolate spiral intertwines with pastry traditions around the world. These sweet treats are often associated with family moments and celebrations, where every family member contributes to their preparation. These spirals are a perfect combination of textures: soft and fluffy dough, creamy chocolate filling, and a hint of flavors that will entice you to take another bite.

Ingredients

For the dough:
- 450 g flour
- 190 ml warm milk
- 60 g margarine
- 1 egg
- 7 g dry yeast
- 150 g sugar
- a pinch of salt

For the filling:
- 1 egg white
- 100 ml milk
- 20 g flour
- 20 g cocoa
- 100 g sugar
- 1 tablespoon margarine

For brushing:
- 1 egg yolk
- 1 tablespoon milk

Step by step: Preparing the chocolate spiral

1. Preparing the dough:
Start by sifting the flour into a large bowl. Add a pinch of salt and the dry yeast. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture, where you will add the wet ingredients.

In another bowl, mix the egg with the sugar, warm milk, and melted margarine. Stir well until you obtain a homogeneous mixture.

Pour the egg mixture into the well in the flour and begin kneading the dough for 10-15 minutes until it becomes elastic and smooth. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.

2. Preparing the filling:
In a small saucepan, heat the milk. In a separate bowl, beat the egg white with a pinch of salt, gradually adding the sugar until you obtain a firm meringue.

Sifting the flour and cocoa, incorporate them into the meringue. Then add the warm milk and mix well. Transfer the mixture to the saucepan with the milk and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the cream thickens. Once thickened, remove from heat and add the margarine, stirring until completely melted.

3. Forming the spiral:
On a floured surface, roll out the dough into a rectangle about 1 cm thick. Spread 2/3 of the chocolate cream over the entire surface of the dough.

Fold the dough into thirds, then again into thirds, forming a small rectangle. Roll out the dough again into a smaller rectangle, about 1.5 cm thick, and add the remaining chocolate filling.

Carefully roll the dough and flatten it slightly. Use a piece of thread to cut rolls about 2 cm thick.

Each roll will be gently stretched and twisted in the opposite direction, forming a beautiful spiral.

4. Fermenting and baking:
Place the spirals on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, leaving space between them. Let them rise for 20 minutes in a warm place.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Once the spirals have risen, brush them with a mixture of egg yolk and milk. Bake the spirals for 25-30 minutes or until they become golden and fluffy.

5. Serving:
After removing them from the oven, let the spirals cool slightly before enjoying them. These delicate chocolate spirals can be served plain, but you can also add a chocolate glaze or powdered sugar for a more festive look.

Practical tips:
- Make sure the milk is warm, not hot, to avoid killing the yeast.
- For an even more intense flavor, you can add vanilla extract to the filling.
- If you want a healthier version, replace margarine with coconut oil or butter.
- Chocolate spirals can be stored in airtight containers for a few days, keeping them fluffy.

Nutritional benefits:
This dessert contains carbohydrates from flour, proteins from eggs, and fats from margarine. Additionally, cocoa brings antioxidants and can have a beneficial effect on mood. However, moderation is essential due to the sugar content.

Frequently asked questions:
- Can I use whole wheat flour instead of white flour?
Yes, but the dough will have a denser texture and may require more liquid.
- What can I do if the dough doesn’t rise?
Make sure the yeast is fresh and that you used warm water or milk, not hot.
- Can I add fruits to the filling?
Of course! Fruits like bananas or cherries can add a fresh and delicious note.

These chocolate spirals are a perfect dessert to bring a smile to your loved ones' faces. Try them and discover how easy it is to create unforgettable moments in the kitchen! Enjoy!
