Nut Rolls – A delicacy that will delight your taste buds

If you are looking for a quick and delicious dessert, nut rolls are the perfect choice! This recipe combines the enticing aroma of cinnamon with the crunchy texture of nuts, resulting in a treat that no one can resist. Although it may seem complicated, each step is simple and satisfying. Let’s embark on this dessert-making adventure together!

Preparation time: 30 minutes
Baking time: 35 minutes
Total time: 65 minutes
Number of servings: 12-15 rolls

Ingredients:

For the dough:
- 550 g flour
- 3 eggs (1 whole and 2 yolks)
- 150 ml milk
- 25 g fresh yeast
- 220 g sugar
- Zest of one lemon
- A pinch of salt
- 2 vials of rum
- 150 g soft butter (at room temperature)
- 100 g baking margarine

For the filling:
- 150 g ground nuts
- 2 tablespoons of cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons of coffee liqueur (Kahlua)

For the syrup:
- 150 ml milk
- 100 g sugar
- 2 packets of vanilla sugar

Preparing the nut rolls:

1. Sifting the flour: Start by sifting the flour into a smaller bowl. This step ensures a fine texture for the dough and eliminates any impurities.

2. Preparing the yeast: Heat 150 ml of milk, taking care not to make it too hot. Add 120 g of sugar, lemon zest, and 1 vial of rum. I prefer to add the yeast to the warm milk to activate it faster. Mix well with a whisk, then add 3 tablespoons of flour to form a sponge. Let the mixture rise for 15 minutes.

3. Mixing the ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the 2 tablespoons of cinnamon with the remaining sugar. Add the soft butter, rum essence, and coffee liqueur. This will be the savory filling for your rolls.

4. Forming the dough: After the yeast has risen, mix it with the sifted flour and eggs. Add the melted margarine and knead the dough vigorously. You should obtain an elastic and homogeneous dough. Cover it with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in volume, which may take about 30-45 minutes, depending on the temperature in the kitchen.

5. Rolling out the dough: Once the dough has risen, sprinkle a little flour on the work surface and roll it out into a thick sheet. Fill the entire surface with the cinnamon and sugar mixture, followed by the ground nuts. This step is essential for achieving flavorful nut rolls.

6. Rolling the dough: Carefully twist the dough into a tight roll. Cut the roll into slices about 2 cm thick. Place the slices on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and let them rise for another 10 minutes.

7. Baking the rolls: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Bake the rolls for 25 minutes or until they become slightly golden.

8. Preparing the syrup: While the rolls are baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine 150 ml of milk, 100 g of sugar, and 2 packets of vanilla sugar. Boil the mixture until the sugar is completely dissolved.

9. Finishing the dish: After the rolls have cooled slightly, pour the warm syrup over them. You can put them back in the oven for a few minutes to caramelize slightly.

10. Serving and variations: You can serve the nut rolls warm or at room temperature. A wonderful idea is to add meringue made from the 2 remaining egg whites mixed with powdered sugar on top for an extra touch of flavor and an elegant presentation.

Useful tips:
- If you want an even fluffier dough, you can replace some of the flour with almond flour.
- Nut rolls pair perfectly with a cup of aromatic coffee or hot tea.
- If you like spices, you can add a dash of nutmeg or ginger to the nut filling.

Nutritional benefits:
This recipe offers not only a unique taste but also nutritional benefits. Nuts are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, while eggs provide essential proteins and vitamins. Of course, it’s important to consume this dessert in moderation, considering the sugar content.

Frequently asked questions:
- Can I use other nuts? Yes, you can try almonds or hazelnuts for a different flavor.
- How can I store the nut rolls? They store well in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days.
- Can I freeze the rolls? Yes, you can freeze the unbaked rolls, and when you wish, you can bake them directly from the freezer.

I wish you much success in making nut rolls! May each bite be an unforgettable experience! Enjoy!
