Quick chocolate strudel with puff pastry

Rapid chocolate strudel is served as a dessert, once it has cooled a little, and it is made with store-bought puff pastry. As a quick puff pastry dessert, the strips are woven over the chocolate and come out golden at the edges, with soft chocolate in the middle. I put the chocolate straight into the dough, piece by piece, without melting it first. Prep: 10 minutes. Cooking: 20 minutes. Total time: 30 minutes. Servings: 6. About 305 kcal and 5 g protein per serving.
Ingredients
- 1 piece Bella puff pastry (thawed)
- 1 Milka chocolate bar (100 g)
- 1 beaten egg
Preparation
1. Preheat the oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with baking paper. 2. Divide the thawed puff pastry into 3 strips. 3. Place the chocolate in the middle, on the centre strip. 4. Cut slits into the dough, centimetre by centimetre, along the sides of the strips, up to the chocolate. 5. Fold the strips over the chocolate, alternating right and left, until it is fully closed. 6. Brush with beaten egg and bake for 20 minutes, until nicely golden. 7. Let it cool a little and serve.
Notes
If you want something less sweet, use a 100 g dark chocolate instead of the milk one, which tastes more restrained. Puff pastry is easiest to work with when it is cold, so if it softens and sticks to the surface, put it in the fridge for a few minutes until it firms up again to the touch. With a sharp knife the slits come out clean, and the strips don't tear when you weave them over the chocolate, even if they are thin. Baking paper on the tray helps, otherwise the bottom of the pastry sticks to the metal. Sometimes the chocolate runs out onto the tray if the edges aren't sealed well. It keeps up to 3 days in the fridge, covered with foil, and can be eaten cold without reheating. Serve it with a cup of coffee or tea, since the soft chocolate and crisp pastry go well with a hot drink. Contains gluten, milk and eggs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use white chocolate?
Yes, it melts the same way, but it browns faster on the edges, so check it often during the 20 minutes.
Does any puff pastry work?
Any thawed rectangular puff pastry from another brand works, since it is divided and woven into 3 strips the same way.
Can I brush it with milk instead of egg?
Yes, 2 tablespoons of milk give a paler crust that is less shiny.
