Desert - Gingerbread House I by Tincuta E. - Recipia
To create a delicious and attractive gingerbread house, you will need a special dough, royal icing, and various candies to add a touch of magic. Start by searching Google for "gingerbread house template" to find the ideal dimensions for your house pieces. You can use cardboard to cut out the templates, or alternatively, trace them directly onto the dough with a ruler, then cut them out with a sharp knife.

The first step is to prepare the ingredients. In a bowl, mix the dry ingredients: flour, baking soda, salt, and spices (cinnamon, ginger, and cloves are the most commonly used). In another bowl, combine the softened butter with the sugar until you get a creamy mixture. Then, gradually add the honey and eggs, continuing to mix well. Once the wet ingredients are combined, add the mixture of dry ingredients and knead until you achieve a dough with a consistency similar to playdough. Cover it with plastic wrap and let it chill in the refrigerator for about an hour.

After the dough has cooled, take it out of the refrigerator and sprinkle a little flour on the work surface. Roll out the dough to an even thickness and cut the shapes for the house according to the chosen template. Bake the pieces in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, being careful not to leave them in too long, as they can dry out. After baking, let them cool completely.

For the royal icing, make sure the egg whites and lemon juice are at room temperature and that the bowl used for beating the egg whites is extremely clean. Start beating the egg whites until they become frothy, then gradually add the powdered sugar, continuing to mix on low speed. Once you achieve a firm consistency, cover the bowl with plastic wrap to prevent the icing from drying out. If you want a thicker icing, add more powdered sugar.

Assembling the gingerbread house may seem like a challenge, but don’t be discouraged if a wall gives a little. The icing will harden and provide stability. Use cups to support the wall until the icing dries completely. For the roof, glue half sugar cubes alternately to provide a solid base. It’s easier to decorate the roof before attaching it to the house.

Once the walls are glued and set, add the roof and let your creativity run wild, decorating with candies, nuts, almonds, or cookies. If you want to color the icing, add a few drops of food coloring for a striking visual effect. Use a piping bag to apply the icing precisely. This gingerbread house will not only be a treat for the taste buds but also a true work of art on your holiday table.

Ingredients

For the gingerbread: 400 g flour, 50 g butter at room temperature, 2 eggs - I used a different type of flour and I think one egg would have been enough, 1/2 cup honey (1 cup = 200 ml), 3/4 cup sugar, 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger, 1/2 teaspoon Kotanyi ground ginger, 1/4 teaspoon Kotanyi nutmeg, 1 teaspoon Kotanyi cinnamon, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon salt. For the royal icing: 2 egg whites at room temperature - the eggs were medium-sized, 330 grams of commercial powdered sugar (I might have added another 2 tablespoons), 2 teaspoons of lemon or lime juice (I used lime).
