Appetizers - Natural Dyes for Easter Eggs by Georgiana D. - Recipia
Eggs are a versatile and delicious ingredient, but they can be transformed into true works of art through natural coloring. We start by washing the eggs thoroughly under a stream of cold water, ensuring that no traces of grease or impurities remain. This step is essential to ensure that the dye will adhere evenly to the surface of the eggs. Once we have cleaned them, we dry them with a clean towel.

Now we prepare the four pots. In the first, we will place a generous layer of red cabbage, which will provide a vibrant hue. In the second pot, we place onion skins, and in the third, peeled and thinly sliced beets. In the last pot, we pour water and add 2-3 tablespoons of turmeric, which will create an attractive golden color. It is important to ensure that each layer of vegetables evenly covers the bottom of the pot.

After preparing the vegetables, we place the eggs in each vessel, covering them with a new layer of ingredients: another layer of cabbage in the first pot, onion skins in the second, and the remaining beets in the third. For the turmeric pot, we add only the eggs in water. We turn on the heat to a very low temperature and let the eggs boil for about 20 minutes. It is essential to monitor them, as the intensity of the color depends on the time they spend in the water. Onion skins, for example, can color the eggs a deep red, so we will check from time to time to avoid a too dark shade.

After the eggs have boiled, we carefully remove them from the pots and leave the leaves in the water to further intensify the color. We place the eggs on a rack to drain excess water. Their appearance will initially be matte and slightly porous due to the coloring. Once they have completely cooled, we take an absorbent napkin and soak it in oil. With this, we gently wipe the eggs, being careful not to scratch them, as any imperfection will become visible.

Through this technique, the eggs will acquire a shiny appearance, with vibrant shades that will catch the eye. When peeling, the dye will remain intact on the shell, and the result will be truly spectacular, transforming simple eggs into edible works of art. These colored eggs are not only a visual delight but also an excellent way to bring a splash of color and joy to the Easter table or any other special occasion.
