Bacon and Egg Pastry - A Traditional Recipe with a Modern Twist

Preparation time: 40 minutes Baking time: 25-30 minutes Total time: 1 hour Servings: 6

I invite you to discover a delicious and comforting recipe with me: Bacon and Egg Pastry. This recipe is a perfect combination of the rich taste of bacon, the aroma of onion, and the fluffy texture of pastry, resulting in a dish that will delight your taste buds. It is said that egg recipes have been prepared throughout history as hearty dishes, often enjoyed at festive meals or on holidays. Let’s put on our aprons and get to work!

Ingredients:

For the pastry:
- 300 g flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons lard
- 1/2 packet baking powder (approximately 10 g)
- Cold water (as needed)

For the filling:
- 100 g bacon
- 1 small red onion
- 1 medium potato
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- 1/2 red bell pepper
- 6 eggs
- 1/2 bunch fresh parsley

Preparation:

Step 1: Preparing the Pastry
We start by mixing the flour with salt and baking powder in a large bowl. Use a spatula or wooden spoon to achieve a uniform texture. Then add the lard, cut into small cubes, and mix well until you obtain a crumbly dough. This step is crucial for achieving a flaky pastry, so take your time.

Gradually add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing continuously until the dough becomes smooth and easy to shape. Once you have achieved the desired consistency, wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. This step helps to firm up the dough, making it easier to roll out later.

Step 2: Preparing the Filling
While the dough is chilling, we prepare the filling. Cut the bacon into suitable slices and fry them in a heated pan until they are golden and crispy. The aromas will begin to fill the kitchen, and the smell of fried bacon is simply irresistible!

Add the finely chopped onion to the bacon and let it sauté together for about 1 minute, until it becomes translucent. Then, cut the potato into small cubes, add it to the pan along with 3 tablespoons of water, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Let the mixture fry for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 3: Assembling the Dish
Once the dough has chilled, sprinkle a little flour on the work surface and roll out the dough into a thin sheet. Throughout this process, make sure the dough does not stick to the work surface by adding extra flour if necessary.

Cut the dough into 6 equal squares, then take muffin tins (or savarin molds) and line them with parchment paper. Place a piece of dough in each mold, ensuring all corners are well covered.

Step 4: Filling and Baking
Each filled mold will now receive a tablespoon of the bacon, onion, and potato filling. On top of each portion, crack an egg, being careful not to break the yolk. Then add the chopped parsley and red bell pepper for an extra splash of color and flavor.

Preheat the oven to 180°C and place the filled molds on a baking tray. Bake the dish for 25-30 minutes or until the egg is set and the pastry turns golden. The aroma that will fill the kitchen during baking will make you eager to savor this delicacy.

Step 5: Serving
After removing them from the oven, let them cool for a few minutes before serving. These bacon and egg pastries are delicious both warm and at room temperature, making them ideal for brunch or a quick dinner.

For a personal touch, you can serve the dish alongside a fresh green salad or homemade mayonnaise, which will perfectly complement the flavors.

Nutritional Benefits:
This dish is rich in protein due to the eggs and bacon, providing an excellent source of energy. The potato adds complex carbohydrates, while the parsley contributes essential vitamins and minerals. Although this dish is more indulgent in terms of calories, consumed in moderation, it can be part of a balanced diet.

Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Can I use another type of fat instead of lard?
- Yes, you can use butter or olive oil for a different flavor.

2. What other vegetables can I add to the filling?
- You can add mushrooms, zucchini, or even spinach for an extra nutrient boost.

3. How can I make the recipe vegetarian?

I hope this bacon and egg pastry recipe inspires you to spend time in the kitchen, exploring the flavors and traditions that make cooking so enjoyable. Don’t forget to share this delicacy with your loved ones and enjoy every bite!
