Homemade braided bread
To prepare a delicious and aromatic bread, we start by gathering the essential ingredients. In a large bowl, we put the flour, making sure it is of high quality, to achieve a fluffy texture. We create a space in the middle of the flour, a small crater where we will add the freshly crumbled yeast. It is important that the yeast is active, so we make sure that the water we use is lukewarm, but not hot, so as not to destroy the microorganisms that help with fermentation. We gradually pour in the water, gently mixing with a fork until the yeast is completely dissolved.
Once we have obtained a homogeneous paste, we add the salt, essential for enhancing the flavor of the bread and strengthening the gluten in the dough. We continue to mix, taking the flour from the edges of the bowl and integrating it into the mixture. It is a moment of magic when the dough begins to gain consistency and pulls away from our hands. Now, we dedicate ourselves to kneading! This is the phase where we put some of our energy into the dough, kneading it for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes elastic and smooth. Then, we cover the bowl with a damp towel and let the dough rise for an hour in a warm place, away from drafts.
After the dough has risen beautifully, we divide it into two equal parts. On a floured work surface, we take the first piece and divide it again into two. Using a rolling pin, we roll each piece of dough into a thin, but manageable sheet, making sure not to neglect the aesthetic aspect. We prepare the second half of the dough in the same way, and then we start braiding. Braiding gives a rustic and appealing look to our breads.
After we finish braiding, we place the loaves in pre-prepared trays, where we let them rise for another 15 minutes. It is the perfect time to prepare a beaten egg, which we will use to brush the surface of the loaves. This step will not only give them a beautiful color but also a crispy crust. We sprinkle sesame or poppy seeds, as preferred, for an extra touch of flavor and texture. We preheat the oven to a medium temperature, and then we place the loaves inside, letting them bake for 45 to 50 minutes. During this time, the inviting aroma will fill the entire house, and our patience will be rewarded with warm and delicious bread. When they are ready, we let them cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy!
