To prepare these delicious donuts, we start by organizing our ingredients so that the process is as simple and enjoyable as possible. In a large bowl, we mix the salt with the sugar, baking powder, and flour. It is important to combine them well to avoid lumps in the dough. This dry mixture will form the base of our donuts.

In another container, we crack the eggs and beat them with a fork, just like for an omelet. We add our favorite flavors – vanilla, lemon, or orange are just a few options that can add a touch of freshness. We continue by incorporating the rum and water, ensuring that the mixture is homogeneous. Once we finish preparing this wet mixture, we pour it over the dry ingredients in the bowl and start kneading. The dough will be slightly sticky, but we shouldn't worry; this is the right consistency.

Now, we add the soft butter, cut into cubes, and continue kneading until it is fully integrated into the dough, giving it a fine and fluffy texture. After we finish kneading, we cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a clean towel and place it in the refrigerator for a few hours; ideally, we should leave it overnight. This step is essential as it helps the dough rest and become easier to shape.

Once the dough has been in the refrigerator, we prepare to fry. We heat the oil in a deep pan over medium heat. It is important to ensure that the oil is hot enough before shaping the donuts so that they brown evenly. With wet hands, we form small balls of dough, making sure to give them a round shape.

We drop the donuts into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd them, allowing them to cook properly. We let them brown until they become golden and crispy. In the meantime, we prepare the syrup from water and sugar, which we let simmer over low heat until it thickens. Once the syrup is ready, we set it aside and let it cool.

After the donuts are fried, we remove them onto a paper towel to absorb the excess oil, then we dip them into the cooled syrup. This step will give them a sweet taste and a shiny appearance. To finish, we sprinkle crushed nuts or pistachios on top, adding a delicious crunchy note. These donuts are perfect to be enjoyed alongside a cup of tea or coffee. Enjoy your meal!
