Egyptian rice pudding - a creamy and comforting dessert
If you are looking for a simple and quick recipe that brings a touch of tradition to your kitchen, Egyptian rice pudding is the perfect choice. This delicious dessert, with a creamy texture and inviting aroma, is ideal for any occasion and will surely impress everyone who tastes it. Here’s how you can prepare it step by step.
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 30-40 minutes
Total time: 50-60 minutes
Number of servings: 4
Ingredients:
- 150 g round rice (preferably dessert rice)
- 1 liter milk (you can use cow's milk or plant-based milk for a vegan version)
- 100 g sugar (or to taste)
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon vanilla (or vanilla essence)
- A pinch of salt
- Ground cinnamon (optional, for decoration)
Instructions:
1. Preparing the rice: Start by rinsing the rice under cold running water to remove excess starch. This step will help achieve a less sticky texture. Place the rice in a large pot and add 500 ml of water. Bring to a medium heat, covering the pot with a lid, for 10-15 minutes, until the rice is almost cooked and the water has been absorbed.
2. Preparing the milk: In another pot, add the remaining milk (500 ml) and sugar. Heat it over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar is completely dissolved. It’s important not to bring the milk to a boil at this stage.
3. Combining the ingredients: Once the rice is cooked, add it to the pot with the warm milk. Stir well to combine the ingredients and let it simmer on low heat. This process will take about 10-15 minutes, and the rice will continue to absorb the milk, becoming extremely creamy.
4. Thickening the mixture: In a small bowl, dilute the 2 teaspoons of cornstarch in a few tablespoons of cold water. Add this mixture to the pot with rice and milk, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Continue cooking for another 5-10 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly.
5. Flavoring: Finally, add the vanilla and a pinch of salt, stirring well. Taste and adjust the sugar level if necessary.
6. Serving: The rice pudding can be served warm or cold, depending on your preference. Divide the mixture into bowls or glasses, allowing them to cool to room temperature before refrigerating. You can decorate with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon or fresh fruits like raspberries or strawberries for a contrast of textures and flavors.
Helpful tips:
- If you want a more exotic version, you can add some raisins or chopped nuts during cooking.
- If you prefer a more intense flavor, replace sugar with honey or maple syrup.
- Egyptian rice pudding is perfect for making in advance and can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
This rice pudding recipe is not just a simple dessert, but also a symbol of Egyptian culinary tradition, bringing authentic taste to every serving. Whether you serve it at a family dinner or a gathering with friends, this dessert will surely bring warmth and joy to every heart. Enjoy!
