Potato Moussaka

Meat - Potato Moussaka by Heracleea J. - Recipia

Potato Moussaka with Pork and Beef One day on March 8th, I remembered the potato moussaka with meat that I used to eat as a child. It wasn't a dish that had particularly touched my heart back then, but I admit that its simple taste sometimes draws me in. Today, I tried to recreate it with a few more flavors that suit my palate. I didn’t change the basic structure, just added a few ingredients that I think fit well. Quick Info Total time: about 1 hour and 45 minutes Preparation time: 30-35 minutes Baking time: 1 hour - 1 hour and 10 minutes Servings: 6-8 Difficulty: medium Recipe type: main dish, suitable for a family meal or a festive lunch Ingredients 500 g ground beef and pork 1.5 kg potatoes 2 stalks of celery 2 garlic cloves 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1.5 teaspoons turmeric chili powder (to taste) 5 slices of kaiser 1 teaspoon ground allspice soy sauce (1 tablespoon or to taste) 2 eggs Himalayan pink salt 200 ml sour cream barbecue sauce (1-2 tablespoons, adjust to preference) grated cheese (for the final layer, 100-150 g is sufficient) Preparation Method 1. Peel the potatoes, wash them, and slice them into medium-thick rounds. Set aside. 2. Heat a pan with a little oil. When the oil is hot, add the finely chopped celery and the crushed or finely chopped garlic cloves. Sauté on low heat for 2-3 minutes. 3. Sprinkle in the cumin, turmeric, allspice, and a little chili powder. Stir and let the spices release their aroma for about 1 minute. 4. Add the kaiser cut into small cubes. Let it brown slightly, still on medium heat, for another 2-3 minutes. 5. Add the ground meat to the pan. Mix and break it up with a spatula, making sure there are no large lumps. Pour in a splash of soy sauce and salt to taste. Continue cooking until the meat changes color completely and starts to brown slightly. It doesn’t need to be fully cooked, just no longer pink and fragrant. Remove the pan from heat. 6. Grease the bottom of a deeper pot (a baking dish works too if you prefer). Lay down a first layer of potato rounds. Don’t overlap them too much, just enough to cover the bottom of the dish. 7. Pour some of the meat mixture over the potatoes. Level it out. Add a second layer of potatoes, then another layer of meat, and continue this until all ingredients are used up. The final layer should be potatoes. 8. In a bowl, beat the two eggs with 200 ml of sour cream until well combined. To this mixture, add 1-2 tablespoons of barbecue sauce, a splash of soy sauce, and a little water (about 2-3 tablespoons), just enough to thin the sauce. Mix well. 9. Pour this sauce over the assembled moussaka, allowing it to seep between the layers. Don’t worry if it doesn’t cover everything perfectly; it will distribute while baking. 10. Sprinkle the grated cheese on top. 11. Bake the moussaka in the oven at 180°C for about an hour or until the top potatoes are nicely browned and a fork easily pierces them. If it browns too quickly, cover it with aluminum foil for the last 20 minutes. 12. Let it cool for 10-15 minutes before cutting. Why I Make This Recipe Often It's a recipe I return to when I crave something hearty, easily adaptable, and can be made with what I have in the fridge. It fills the table and can be reheated. The layers hold up well even the next day. Tips and Variations Tips Sliced potatoes should not be too thick; otherwise, they won't cook evenly. Don’t overload the moussaka with too much liquid; the eggs and sour cream are enough for binding. If the meat mixture seems dry, you can add a tablespoon or two of water during cooking. Substitutions You can omit the kaiser or replace it with bacon. Sour cream can be substituted with Greek yogurt, although the texture will be slightly different. You can use only pork or only beef for the ground meat if you don’t have a mix. Variations You can add a few thin slices of bell pepper or onion in the meat layer for extra flavor. If you want the moussaka creamier, use more sour cream or add cheese between layers. Serving Ideas It pairs well with a green salad or pickles. It’s suitable both warm and at room temperature. Frequently Asked Questions Do I need to boil the potatoes beforehand? No, it’s not necessary. If sliced thinly, they cook well in the oven. If cut too thick, they may remain hard. Can I use only pork? Yes, the moussaka can be made with just pork. The flavor is slightly different, but it works just as well. Can I use new potatoes? Yes, but they will soften a bit faster and have a sweeter taste. Slice them as thinly as possible. Is the barbecue sauce necessary? No, but it adds a slightly smoky and sweet note. It can be replaced with a tablespoon of tomato paste or omitted. Can the moussaka be frozen? It can be frozen in portions, but the potatoes may change texture upon thawing. It’s better to keep it in the fridge and consume it within 2-3 days. Nutritional Values (Estimates) An average serving (1/8 of the dish) has approximately: Calories: 350-400 kcal Protein: 18-22 g Fat: 18-22 g Carbohydrates: 32-38 g Values are estimates and may vary depending on the ingredients used and portion sizes. Storage and Reheating The moussaka keeps well in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. It can be reheated in the oven at 150°C, covered with foil, or in the microwave. I don’t recommend keeping it for more than 3 days, and freezing will change the texture of the potatoes. Ideally, it should be consumed fresh or at most the next day.

Preparation

In a pan, I heated a little oil, then added finely chopped celery, garlic, spices, and let them cook for a bit. I then added diced kaiser and later added the minced meat. I added a bit of soy sauce, salt, and let the meat cook until it changed color and browned nicely. I peeled, washed, and sliced the potatoes into not very thick rounds. Once the meat was browned, I set the pan aside. In a tall pot, I added a little oil to the bottom, then placed a layer of potatoes, some of the prepared meat, another layer of potatoes, and so on until all the meat was added, finishing with a layer of potato rounds on top. Over these layers of meat and potatoes, I added 2 beaten eggs with 200 ml of sour cream and a barbecue sauce with soy sauce and a little water. I grated cheese on top and baked the moussaka until it was beautifully browned and the potatoes were softened. Enjoy your meal!
