Melted Potatoes

Cleaning the potatoes is the first essential step to achieving a delicious side dish. Choose medium-sized, firm potatoes without blemishes. After peeling them, cut them into thick strips lengthwise to allow for even cooking. These strips will have a pleasant texture and will brown nicely in the oven. Place the potatoes in a pot of hot salted water and let them boil for about 5 minutes. This step will help soften the potatoes slightly, preparing them for baking. After 5 minutes, drain them well, being careful not to crush them. Arrange the drained potatoes in a heatproof dish (baking tray) that you have previously greased with butter to prevent sticking. It is important that the layers of potatoes are nicely aligned to ensure even cooking. Sprinkle salt and pepper over the first layer of potatoes, then add a generous layer of grated cheese. This will provide a rich flavor and creamy texture. Between the potatoes in the first layer, add a few pieces of butter, distributed evenly, for added flavor. Interleave the remaining potatoes between those in the first layer, making sure not to leave gaps. It is essential that each layer is seasoned, so repeat the seasoning process with salt, pepper, and grated cheese. Don’t forget to add a few pieces of butter as well. If you are preparing a larger quantity of potatoes, you can continue adding layers, ensuring that the top layer consists of cheese and butter to achieve a delicious crust at the end. Once you have finished assembling the dish, place it in the preheated oven at medium temperature. Let it bake for 20-30 minutes or until the cheese melts and turns golden, and the potatoes cook perfectly, with a nicely browned crust on top. When ready, remove them from the oven and let them cool slightly before serving. This delicious side dish can be served warm, plain, alongside a fresh salad, or as an accompaniment to various main courses. Enjoy every bite of this simple yet flavorful recipe!
