Sandwich with salam bănățean and cheese

Salanova lettuce leaves add crunch to this sandwich with salam bănățean, a Romanian Banat salami, and cheese, layered in seeded bread. Tomato, cucumber and red onion make it juicy, while the melted cheese holds the layers together. I like to cut it in half diagonally and eat it while the bread is still soft. Preparation: 15 minutes. Cooking: 0 minutes. Total time: 15 minutes. Servings: 2. Approximately 600 kcal and 25 g protein per serving.
Ingredients
- 1 seeded loaf
- 2 wedges of processed cheese with sour cream
- 2 Salanova lettuce leaves
- 2 slices of Delaco cheese
- 2 round slices of large tomato
- 6 slices of salam bănățean
- 3 slices of cucumber
- 3 large round slices of red onion
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper
Preparation
1. Wash the lettuce leaves, remove the thick base and pat them dry. Wash the large tomato and cut 2 round slices. Wash a piece of cucumber and cut 3 slices. Peel the red onion, wash it and cut 3 large round slices. 2. Cut the seeded bread in half lengthwise. Spread one wedge of processed cheese with sour cream on the bottom half. 3. Layer on the lettuce, cheese, tomato slices, 6 slices of salam, cucumber and onion. If you like, sprinkle 1/8 teaspoon each of salt and ground pepper over the tomato. 4. Spread the other wedge of processed cheese on the other half of the bread and place it on top.
Notes
You can wash the vegetables ahead of time, but I put the sandwich together just before eating so the bread doesn’t soak up the tomato juice. I serve it with a mug of soup, like an ordinary lunch sandwich. You can use 6 slices of sliced turkey breast instead of the salami; the bread contains gluten, and the processed cheese and cheese contain dairy. Choose a firm tomato that isn’t too ripe, since soft slices slide out of the filling. Bread with a tighter crumb holds together better than very airy bread.
Frequently asked questions
Can I replace the tomato with bell pepper?
Yes, use 2 thin slices of bell pepper instead of the tomato slices.
Can I use mozzarella instead of cheese?
Yes, use 2 well-drained slices of mozzarella so they don’t make the bread soggy.
Can I use pickled cucumber?
Yes, use 3 slices of pickled cucumber and pat them dry with a paper towel before adding them to the sandwich.
