Green beans with chicken drumsticks in the multicooker is cooked in layers, then sits for an hour on the STEW setting. The yellow wax beans and vegetables soften in the tomato sauce, and the drumsticks turn tender. I prefer the beans broken into longer pieces, not short ones. Prep: 20 minutes. Cook: 90 minutes. Total: 110 minutes. Serves: 6. About 340 kcal and 28 g protein per serving.

Ingredients

  • 12 chicken drumsticks (about 1.2 kg)
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 medium onion (150 g)
  • 2 medium carrots (120 g)
  • 3 celery stalks (120 g)
  • 500 g yellow wax beans
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1 g sweet paprika
  • 500 ml cold water
  • 2 medium tomatoes (300 g)
  • 15 g dill

Preparation

1. Plug in the multicooker, select FRY for 10 minutes and pour 3 tablespoons of canola oil into the pot. Pat the drumsticks dry with paper towels and brown the first 6 until they take on a little color. 2. Add the other 6 drumsticks to the same oil and set FRY for 10 minutes again. Remove all the drumsticks from the pot. 3. Add the finely chopped onion, carrots and celery stalks to the sauce and oil left in the pot. Cook on FRY for 10 minutes, until the vegetables soften. 4. Trim the beans and break them into larger pieces. Dice the tomatoes. 5. Arrange half the beans in the pot, then the drumsticks, then the rest of the beans. Sprinkle with the salt, pepper and paprika, pour in 500 ml cold water and add the tomatoes. 6. Set the STEW program for 1 hour. When it’s done, check that the beans are soft and the meat is cooked through to the bone. 7. Finely chop the dill and sprinkle it over the dish.

Notes

Leftovers keep for up to 3 days in the fridge in a covered container. When reheating, add a little water if the sauce has thickened. Young, slender beans soften more easily than broad, fibrous ones, so choose tender ones if you want them to stay soft after an hour. Drumsticks that are similar in size cook more evenly, while very large ones may need a little more time on STEW. Sometimes the tomatoes release liquid and the sauce looks thin when you open the pot. Leave the beans in the liquid for a few moments before serving. There was no cooking smell in the kitchen while the multicooker was running. If you don’t have fresh tomatoes, replace the two tomatoes with 250 g cherry tomatoes, halved. Serve with homemade bread so you can mop up the sauce.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use chicken thighs instead of drumsticks?

Yes, use 6 bone-in thighs, about 1.2 kg in total, and brown them in batches of 3.

Can I use frozen green beans?

Yes, add 500 g straight from the freezer and reduce the water to 350 ml, since frozen beans may release more liquid.

Can I use chicken breast?

Yes, cut 700 g chicken breast into pieces about 4 cm across and add them during the last 25 minutes of cooking.

What should I do if the beans are still firm after the program?

Pour in 100 ml hot water and leave the appliance on STEW for another 10 minutes, then check whether the beans have softened.
