Fun sandwich for kids

Fun sandwich for kids: butter the bread while it’s still hot, then add the cheese and decorate it with a face made from ham, egg and vegetables. For a festive meal, each slice becomes a little person with lettuce hair and a mouth made from pickled gogosar peppers, and it’s filling enough for kids. I use slices of bread with a denser crumb, which hold the decorations in place. Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 4 minutes. Total time: 19 minutes. Servings: 6. About 230 kcal and 13 g protein per serving.
Ingredients
- 6 slices of bread for toast
- 20 g butter
- 6 slices of semi-hard cheese or sliced processed cheese
- 6 lettuce leaves
- 6 slices of pressed ham or cotlet haiducesc
- 3 hard-boiled eggs
- 6 rounds of boiled carrot
- 6 slices of pickled gogosar peppers
Preparation
1. Toast the bread slices in a toaster for about 4 minutes in total, until the edges are golden. Butter them while they’re still hot. 2. Place a slice of semi-hard cheese or processed cheese on each slice of bread. 3. Cut the hard-boiled eggs into rounds. On each slice, make the face from ham, the hair from lettuce, the eyes from egg, the nose from carrot and the mouth from pickled gogosar peppers.
Notes
Serve with a bowl of sliced tomatoes. You can use cotlet haiducesc, a Romanian pork loin, instead of ham, and replace the semi-hard cheese with sliced processed cheese; the bread contains gluten, the dairy contains milk, and the decorations include eggs. Slices with a denser crumb hold the decorations better, and pat the gogosar peppers dry if there’s a lot of vinegar on the surface. I put them together close to serving time, because the lettuce softens the bread if it sits on it for too long. I take my time with the decorations, because little pieces of gogosar pepper can shift when I place the mouth.
Frequently asked questions
How many egg slices should I use for the eyes?
Use two rounds on each slice. Cut the eggs into rounds about 5 mm thick so they stay whole.
Can I toast the bread in a frying pan?
Yes. Put the slices in a dry frying pan over medium heat and toast them for 1-2 minutes on each side.
What can I use instead of pickled gogosar peppers?
Use 6 thin strips of red bell pepper for the mouths and adjust their length to fit each face.
