Almond and chocolate hearts

Almond and Chocolate Hearts – A Sweet Martisor for Spring Spring brings not only flowers and sunshine but also a wonderful opportunity to give and celebrate love and friendship. Every year, on March 1st, Romanians exchange Martisoare, symbols of renewal and joy. This year, I bring you a delicious recipe for almond and chocolate hearts, perfect for sweetening this celebration. It’s a simple dessert to make, yet it has a remarkable visual and taste impact. Let’s begin our culinary adventure! Preparation time: 30 minutes Baking time: 11 minutes Total time: 1 hour and 41 minutes Number of servings: Approximately 20 hearts Ingredients: For the dough: - 125 g butter (at room temperature) - 1 tablespoon sugar - juice from 1/2 orange - 1 teaspoon grated orange and/or lemon zest - 1 teaspoon baking powder - 100 g ground almonds - 200 g flour - a pinch of salt For the glaze: - 100 g dark chocolate - 3 tablespoons liquid cream - ground almonds (for sprinkling) Step-by-step preparation: 1. Preparing the dough: Start by placing the soft butter in a large bowl. Add the sugar, salt, orange zest, and baking powder mixed with the orange juice. Mix everything with a spatula or mixer until you achieve a homogeneous mixture. 2. Incorporating dry ingredients: Add the ground almonds to the butter mixture. Then, start incorporating the flour, adding about 100-150 g. When the dough becomes harder to mix, transfer it to a floured work surface and begin kneading. 3. Kneading: Knead the dough until all the flour is well incorporated and you obtain a smooth ball. It is important not to over-knead, as this can affect the final texture of the cookies. 4. Resting the dough: Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it chill in the refrigerator for one hour. This will help firm up the butter, making the dough easier to work with. 5. Cutting the hearts: Once the dough has cooled, take it out of the refrigerator and let it sit for a few minutes at room temperature. Divide the dough into two portions. Roll out each portion on a floured work surface until you obtain a sheet about 5 mm thick. Use a large heart-shaped cutter to cut out the hearts. Then, use a smaller cutter to cut out the center of each large heart. 6. Baking: Place the hearts on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake them in a preheated oven at 170 degrees Celsius for 10-11 minutes, or until they turn slightly golden. Let them cool completely on a cooling rack. 7. Preparing the glaze: In a bowl, add the broken chocolate pieces and liquid cream. Place the bowl over a double boiler, stirring constantly until the chocolate melts and becomes homogeneous. Make sure the water in the pot does not touch the bottom of the bowl with chocolate. 8. Decorating: Use a knife to spread melted chocolate glaze on each heart and sprinkle ground almonds on top. Let them set before serving. Serving suggestions: These almond and chocolate hearts are perfect to be given as sweet Martisoare. You can present them in a beautiful box or on a platter decorated with spring flowers. They are excellent alongside a cup of fruit tea or aromatic coffee. Recipe variations: If you don’t have almonds, you can use hazelnuts or walnuts, depending on your preferences. You can also add spices like cinnamon or ginger to the dough for an extra flavor boost. Nutritional information: These hearts are a good source of healthy fats due to the almonds, which contain protein and fiber. Additionally, dark chocolate provides beneficial antioxidants for health. Each heart has approximately 80 calories, depending on the size and amount of glaze used. Frequently asked questions: - Can I use white chocolate? Of course! You can replace dark chocolate with white chocolate, but be careful to adjust the sugar amount in the recipe, as white chocolate is sweeter. - How can I make the dough more aromatic? You can add vanilla extract or almond essence for an even more intense flavor. - Can the hearts be frozen? Yes, these cookies can be frozen. Make sure to package them well to prevent them from drying out. This recipe will not only delight your taste buds but will also bring a smile to the faces of your loved ones. Try to enjoy every step of making these hearts and let your imagination soar as you choose the most beautiful ways to give them. Have a wonderful spring!
