Elderflower cordial from grandma – A refreshing and aromatic drink Who doesn't know the enticing scent of elderflower blossoms? This traditional drink, full of history and memories, is perfect for hot summer days, but also for moments when you want to refresh yourself with something natural and delicious. Elderflower cordial is the result of a magical combination of elderflowers and other aromatic ingredients that blend in a truly special way. In this recipe, I will show you how to prepare a delicious elderflower cordial with lemon and grapefruit, while also providing you with some useful tips to achieve a perfect result. The preparation time is about 20 minutes, but the drink will require 4 days to ferment at room temperature. In the end, you will obtain approximately 3 liters of elderflower cordial, ideal for the whole family. Ingredients for elderflower cordial - 3 liters filtered water - 1 pink grapefruit - 3 lemons - 10 elderflower blossoms (fresh) - Sour dried fruits (e.g., gooseberries) - A few strawberries (optional) - A few sprigs of mint (fresh) - 1 cup mint syrup (optional, for an extra flavor) Necessary utensils - A large pot or glass container - A cheesecloth or thin cloth - An elastic band or string - Glass bottles for storage Steps to prepare elderflower cordial 1. Preparing the ingredients: Start by washing all the fruits well. Slice the grapefruit and lemons into thin slices. If using strawberries, remove the leaves and cut them in half. 2. Infusing the elderflowers: In the chosen container, add the elderflowers, grapefruit and lemon slices, sour fruits, and a few sprigs of mint. If you want a more intense flavor, you can also add the mint syrup. 3. Adding the water: Pour filtered water over the mixture of ingredients. Make sure the water fully covers all the fruits and flowers. 4. Macerating: Cover the container with a cheesecloth and secure it with an elastic band. Allow the elderflower cordial to ferment at room temperature for 4 days. It is important to check the mixture daily, stirring gently with a wooden spoon to help release the flavors. 5. Checking the acidity: After 4 days, taste the elderflower cordial. If it is acidic enough for your taste, it is ready to be strained. If you prefer a more pronounced acidity, you can let it ferment for another 1-2 days, being careful to monitor it. 6. Straining and bottling: Use a cheesecloth or thin cloth to strain the elderflower cordial into glass bottles. Make sure no pieces of flowers or fruits remain. You can keep the drink in the refrigerator, where it will stay fresh. 7. Serving: Elderflower cordial is served cold, perfect for enjoying on hot days, alongside family and friends. You can garnish it with slices of lemon or grapefruit and a few mint leaves for an attractive look. Useful tips - Choosing elderflowers: Make sure the elderflowers are fresh and free of impurities. Pick them preferably in the morning when the aroma is at its peak. - Natural additives: If you want to add a flavor note, you can experiment with various fruits or aromatic herbs, such as basil or lavender. - Fermentation: If you don’t have sunlight, the elderflower cordial will ferment more slowly. Adding a tablespoon of whole wheat can speed up the process due to the gluten that aids fermentation. - Storage: Ensure that the bottles in which you store the elderflower cordial are clean and dry to prevent contamination. Nutritional benefits Elderflower cordial is a natural drink, rich in antioxidants due to the elderflowers and fruits used. It is also a good source of vitamin C from lemons and grapefruits, helping to strengthen the immune system. Additionally, it is a healthy alternative to carbonated drinks, with low calorie content, making it ideal for those who want to stay healthy. Frequently asked questions - Can I use other fruits? Yes, you can experiment with different seasonal fruits like peaches, raspberries, or blackberries. - Can I make elderflower cordial without mint syrup? Sure, the mint syrup is optional, but it adds a refined taste. In its absence, the elderflower cordial will still be just as delicious. - How long does elderflower cordial last? If kept in the refrigerator, elderflower cordial stays fresh for about 1-2 weeks. Delicious variations To diversify the recipe, you can try: - Elderflower cordial with tropical fruits: Add slices of pineapple and mango for an exotic touch. - Elderflower cordial with spices: Add a few cinnamon sticks or some cloves during fermentation for a different taste. - Elderflower cordial with aromatic herbs: Try adding basil or rosemary for a surprising flavor. Preparation

Elderflower syrup grandma's recipe. I put everything to macerate and left it for 4 days at room temperature. This time I made 2 types of elderflower syrup: one with lemon and the other with grapefruit, to see how each turns out. Both are very tasty, but the family preferred to mix them... so from now on, I will make them happy! Since there was no sun, the juice did not ferment, but if you want a stronger effect, it's good to add 1 tablespoon of whole wheat to the water (the gluten from the wheat will accelerate the fermentation process of the juice). Enjoy!
