Heart-Shaped Cupcakes for Valentine's Day

We start by preparing the necessary ingredients for a delightful two-flavor cake. In a large bowl, we pour in the flour, add the packet of baking powder, and mix with a spatula or wooden spoon until the two ingredients combine perfectly. This will ensure an even levelling of the cake and prevent the formation of lumps. Next, we take care of the butter. We cut a piece of room temperature butter and place it in a small bowl. We put the bowl in the microwave, setting it to medium power. We leave the butter in the microwave for a few seconds, being careful not to overheat it, but just to partially melt it. Once it starts to melt, we take the bowl out and set it aside to reach room temperature, which will facilitate its integration into the mixture. In another bowl, we crack the eggs and add the sugar. Using an electric mixer, we beat the mixture on medium speed for about 5 minutes, until the mixture becomes frothy and triples in volume. This step is crucial, as the incorporated air will give the cake a fluffy and airy texture. After achieving a consistent foam, we add the melted and cooled butter, as well as the milk. We continue mixing on low speed until all the ingredients combine harmoniously into a smooth batter. This is the base of our cake. Now it's time to add the flour. We sprinkle it over the wet mixture, gently folding with a spatula, using up-and-down motions. It is important not to mix too vigorously to keep the air in the mixture and ensure a fluffy cake. Once the flour is fully incorporated, we divide the batter into two equal parts, placing them in separate bowls. In one of the bowls, we add 2 packets of vanilla sugar, mixing carefully until well combined. This part will have a sweet and floral flavor, which will perfectly contrast with the other. In the second bowl, we add the rum essence and cocoa. We mix well, ensuring that the cocoa is well integrated, resulting in a rich composition with a dark color hue. Now, we are ready to combine the two mixtures, creating a marbled or alternating pattern, depending on preference. This cake will not only have an attractive appearance but will also provide an explosion of flavors, perfect for any occasion.
