Baked Camembert cheese with salad and croutons

Savory - Baked Camembert cheese with salad and croutons by Marcela K. - Recipia

I have often made baked Camembert with salad and croutons, especially when I feel like something quick with good cheese. Fondue cheese is not easy to find in my town, so I tried Camembert and everyone really liked it. I usually prepare the cheeses in small, individual dishes so that everyone has their own portion. The croutons turn out well if you use flavored ciabatta, and I make the salad with whatever vegetables I have at home. Quick Info Total time: about 20 minutes Preparation time: 8-10 minutes Baking time: 10-12 minutes Servings: 2 Difficulty: easy Recipe type: quick snack or light dinner Ingredients 2 pieces of Camembert cheese (I used Milkana) 1 ciabatta bread with tomatoes and olives (I got it from Kaufland) 1 tablespoon olive oil For the salad: 2 tomatoes 1 apple 1 red onion 1 cucumber few arugula leaves few fresh mint leaves 2-3 tablespoons red grapefruit juice 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 teaspoon raw sugar salt and pepper to taste Preparation method 1. Remove the Camembert from its packaging. Score the top with a knife, without cutting all the way through. Place each piece in a small oven-safe dish for individual portions. 2. Cut the ciabatta into cubes. Place the cubes on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and drizzle with a little olive oil. 3. Preheat the oven to 180-190°C. Place both the cheese dishes and the tray with bread in the oven, on the same level or on two levels if necessary. Leave them for 10 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, prepare the salad. Wash and peel the vegetables. Slice the tomatoes and cucumber, julienne the onion, and cube the apple. Tear the arugula and mint leaves into larger pieces so they don’t get lost in the salad. Put all the vegetables in a bowl. 5. Add salt, pepper, raw sugar, olive oil, and grapefruit juice on top. Mix well. 6. After 10 minutes, check the cheese – it should be warm and soft inside. If it hasn’t melted well or has hardened on top, leave it in the oven for another 2-3 minutes. 7. Remove the cheese and croutons from the oven. On each plate, place a few arugula leaves, some salad, and half of the croutons. Next to it, place the dish with warm Camembert. Serve immediately. Why I make the recipe often I prepare it often because it’s quick, doesn’t require hard-to-find ingredients, and satisfies the craving for warm cheese. It’s suitable as both a hearty snack and a light dinner. Tips and variations Tips - Serve the cheese immediately after taking it out of the oven while it’s soft. - If it sits too long and hardens, you can reheat it briefly. - Don’t let the croutons burn – check them after 8 minutes. Substitutions - Instead of Camembert, you can try Brie if you can’t find anything else. - If you don’t have ciabatta with tomatoes and olives, any dense homemade bread will work. Variations - The salad can be adapted with roasted beets or seasonal vegetables. - For an extra flavor, you can drizzle a bit of honey over the warm cheese. Serving ideas - It’s good as a platter for appetizers at a gathering with multiple guests, each having their own portion. - A few raw nuts or slices of pear go well alongside. Frequently asked questions How long should the Camembert stay in the oven to be soft inside? Usually, 10 minutes is enough at 180-190°C, but it depends on the oven. Check to see if it’s soft when you gently press it with a spoon. Can I use another type of bread for the croutons? Yes, any dense bread or even older baguette works, just make sure it’s cut into cubes and doesn’t absorb too much oil. Can grapefruit juice be replaced with something else in the salad? You can use lemon juice, orange juice, or even vinegar, but grapefruit gives a fresh flavor and balances the cheese. What can I do if I don’t have small oven-safe dishes? You can bake both pieces of Camembert in a larger ceramic dish, then cut when serving. Can the salad be made with other vegetables? Yes, you can adapt it based on what you have – bell peppers, raw carrots, or even radishes. Nutritional values Approximately, one serving (Camembert + salad + croutons) has about 500-600 kcal, depending on the size of the cheese and the amount of bread. Camembert has around 250 kcal per 100 g, most of which come from fats and proteins. The bread adds carbohydrates, while the salad keeps the calories relatively low. Per serving: approximately 25-30 g protein, 30-35 g fat, 40-50 g carbohydrates. These are just estimates. Storage and reheating Baked cheese doesn’t store well; it hardens when it cools. I recommend making and serving it immediately. The croutons last 1-2 days at room temperature, and the salad is best fresh. If you have leftover cheese, you can briefly heat it in the oven, but the texture won’t be the same.
