How to Slice or Chop and Mince Garlic

Step 1: Start by separating the garlic cloves from the bulb, making sure to choose cloves that are firm and free of spots. Press the flat side of a knife onto each garlic clove using a firm but gentle motion to loosen and break the skin. This will make it much easier to remove. Pinch the skin with your fingers and pull it off completely. After you have peeled the cloves, cut each clove in half lengthwise. It is recommended to peel, remove, and discard the green sprout from the center of the clove using the tip of a knife, as it is considered bitter and may affect the taste of your dishes. Step 2: Once you have prepared all the halved cloves, move on to slicing them. Use a sharp kitchen knife to cut each half into very thin slices, either crosswise or lengthwise, depending on your preference. These slices can be used as is in various dishes or finely chopped to add extra flavor. Make sure the slices are uniform to allow for even cooking. Step 3: Hold the knife handle with one hand, and with the other hand, place your fingers on the tip of the knife for better control. Rock the knife back and forth over the slices of garlic, keeping the tip of the knife in a relatively constant position. Gently move the handle side to the right and left, continuing this process until the garlic is finely chopped. This method will help you achieve a uniform texture of the garlic, perfect for use in various recipes. Step 4: Once you have the chopped garlic, gather it into a pile and use a knife to scrape the remaining pieces of garlic off the blade. Add these pieces to the pile of chopped garlic. Continue chopping, rocking the knife again, so that the pieces of garlic are minced until they become very fine. This will cause the garlic to release its intense aroma and integrate perfectly into your culinary dishes, whether it’s sauces, soups, or stir-fried dishes. The prepared garlic will add depth and an unmistakable flavor to the dishes you will prepare.
