Tuna shell pasta salad

Pasta/Pizza - Tuna shell pasta salad by Giorgiana I. - Recipia

Shell-shaped pasta gives this tuna shell pasta salad its distinctive shape, while mayonnaise brings everything together with lemon juice. The red onion and pepper stay slightly crunchy, and cilantro adds a fresh, green flavor. I serve it cold, straight from the fridge. Prep: 20 minutes. Cook: 10 minutes. Total: 30 minutes. Serves: 4. Approximately 560 kcal and 27 g protein per serving.

Ingredients

  • 2500 ml water
  • 15 g salt
  • 250 g shell-shaped pasta
  • 1 medium red onion (150 g)
  • 1 medium bell pepper (150 g)
  • 275 g tuna in oil
  • Juice of 2 lemons
  • 100 g mayonnaise
  • 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 15 g cilantro (culantro)
  • 1 basil leaf

Preparation

1. Bring 2500 ml of water and 15 g of salt to a boil. Once boiling, add the pasta and cook for 10 minutes or as directed on the package, until tender but still holding its shape. 2. Rinse the pasta under cold water and let it drain well. 3. Cut the red onion and pepper into small dice. Drain the oil from the tuna and mix it with the pasta, onion and pepper. 4. Add the lemon juice, 100 g of mayonnaise, 1/2 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of pepper. Mix until the pasta is coated in mayonnaise. 5. Finely chop the cilantro and stir it in. Garnish with the basil leaf.

Notes

Caracoles pasta at least doubles in volume as it cooks, so choose a roomy pot. Larger pasta or pasta made from durum wheat may take longer than smaller shapes; for a salad, stop cooking when the center is no longer hard but the pasta still holds its shape. Canned tuna in whole pieces keeps its shape better than flaked tuna, which breaks apart in the mix. The salad contains gluten from the pasta, fish from the tuna and eggs from the mayonnaise; for a gluten-free version, use 250 g of gluten-free pasta. Serve it with slices of toast and tomatoes. Keep it covered in the fridge for up to 3 days and mix before serving.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use tuna in water instead of tuna in oil?

Yes, use 250 g of tuna in water, well drained. The salad will still have a good texture, although the tuna won’t add oil to the mix.

What pasta can I use if I can’t find caracoles?

Fusilli or penne work well in the salad. Cook them according to the package time and check that they stay firm.

What can I use instead of cilantro?

Add 15 g of finely chopped parsley. Stir it in at the same time, at the end.

What does it mean to cut vegetables brunoise?

Cut the onion and pepper into small dice, about 4 mm. The small pieces mix evenly through the pasta.
