Iced coffee

Coffee - Iced coffee by Vera I. - Recipia

Iced coffee is cold coffee made with espresso and frothed milk, and the cubes need at least two hours in the freezer. In the glass, the milk stays airy, while the cubes melt gradually and keep the coffee flavor present without watering down the drink like regular ice. I drink it without sugar so I can taste the espresso more clearly. Prep time: 5 minutes. Cook time: 0 minutes. Rest time: minimum 2 hours. Total time: minimum 2 hours and 5 minutes. Servings: 1. Approximately 52 kcal and 3 g protein per serving.

Ingredients

  • 80 ml espresso
  • 80 ml milk
  • 1 teaspoon (5 g) sugar (optional)

Preparation

1. Pour 80 ml espresso into ice cube trays and freeze for at least 2 hours, until the coffee is completely frozen. 2. Froth 80 ml milk until it forms a fine foam. 3. Put the frothed milk in a glass, add the coffee cubes and 1 teaspoon (5 g) sugar, if you like.

Notes

It goes well with a plain biscuit; the drink contains dairy. The cubes can be made ahead and kept in a sealed container so they don't pick up smells from the freezer. Larger molds may need more than two hours, and concentrated espresso keeps the coffee flavor more present when mixed with milk. Sometimes the cubes stick together in the tray; remove them and store them separately once frozen. I use a coffee machine with a frothing function, but a separate milk frother does the same job.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use instant coffee?

Yes. Dissolve 2 teaspoons instant coffee in 80 ml hot water and let it cool before pouring it into the trays.

What milk makes a denser foam?

Cold whole cow's milk with about 3.5% fat usually makes a more consistent foam than skim milk.

Can I use oat milk?

Yes, choose the barista version, which is formulated to froth better than regular oat milk.
